2021.12.07 02:55 eagletong How to choose a SUP board (Standup Paddle Board)?

How to choose a SUP board (Standup Paddle Board)? How to choose a sup (Stand Up Paddle Board) If you live by the sea, and walk along the beach, river, or lake, you would notice that more and more people standing on a board in the water, like surfing, but with paddles in their hands. Yes, that is called SUP, standing for Stand-Up Paddle.
Stand-Up Paddle is an interesting water sport that has become more and more popular these days. Comparing to surfing, the board is wider, and it is safer for people who is new to water sport, no matter if you are young or old. You can stand, sit, or even lying on the board. While paddling, it would get your body, legs, arms working, your muscles would get exercised. You can even take a long trip in the river.
SUP is a lot of fun!
Brief History of SUP Speaking of Stand-up Paddling, it has a long story in human history! From the thousand years ago, people standing on board, or simply a piece of big flat wood, paddling to travel in the water have been recorded in books across many continents.
For modern Stand-up paddling, it is an outdoor water sport, originated in Hawaii, began in the 1940s in Waikiki. John Ah Choy was a local Hawaiian who surfed, but as he got older and was unable to get up and down from his board, he would stand on his board from the break and paddle out with a canoe paddle to catch waves. His sons, Leroy and Bobby Ah Choy, and their friend, Duke Kahanamoku, started to mimic this while they taught surfing to visiting tourists. They did this as a way to keep an eye on surf students while also monitoring the incoming swell. They also utilized the vantage point of being out on the water to take pictures. As the style became popular with other surfers, it took on the name Beach Boy Surfing after the instructors, who were called Waikiki Beach Boys. Steve West credits outrigger canoeing combined with surfing as the basis of SUP, since the individual skills (board riding and paddling) already existed. In the 1990s Laird Hamilton redefined and modernized standup paddleboarding as a sport. In 2004, SUP surfing was added as a category in the Buffalo Big Board Contest.
Different Types of SUP Board SUP surfing has diversified from a variation of surfing into racing, touring, yoga, whitewater and fishing.
And the boards are different according to different surfing.
Different types of SUP boards
You can see that, for different usage, shapes are different.
Here we give you some introduction.
SUP SURF: SUP surfing is a variation of traditional surfing. Instead of lying prone on the surf board and paddling with arms to get out to the surf zone, SUP surfing allows the participant to stand on the board from the shore and paddle out to the surf zone using a SUP paddle.
SUP TOURING: This kind of board is longer and wider than a SUP surfing board. The displacement hull allows the board to glide and track similar to a canoe or kayak. Normally, there are lash tabs with bungees or riggings, and you can tie your luggage to the board for a long trip in the river. It would be safer to travel in flat water, like peaceful river or lake on a SUP touring board.
SUP ALL-ROUND: Sup all-round board is an elementary level board. It’s for beginners to SUP board. Even child can enjoy water sport on it.
SUP RACING: SUP racing board is for speed racing. As you can see in the picture, the racing board is streamlined and slimer for reducing the resistance in water, made of the material as light as possible.
SUP YOGA: Simply speaking, SUP yoga board is the biggest board of all types. Doing yoga on a SUP yoga board floating in water will improve your balancing and concentration much better than on the ground. The SUP yoga board is the wider and heavier than a regular SUP board so that it could provide enough buoyancy and stability for doing yoga on it. And if you tie a few yoga boards together, it would become a platform, and can be more stable.
About the boards There are hard SUP boards and inflatable SUP boards.
At the very beginning when SUP became a water sport, there were only hard boards which were made of wood or bamboo.
SUP Board Maod of Wood
As the material technology improves, Plastic, ABS, glass fabric, carbon fiber are used to make SUP board, similar as regular surfing board. The weight is lighter than wood.
Plastic SUP Board
The hard board can be painted very beautiful and characteristic. Because the board is hard, the painting on it is solid and firm, and would not distort like which is painted on a deflated SUP board. And the surface of a hard board is usually polished to reduce the resistance in water.
Because the hard boards made of wood, ABS and glass fabric are unfoldable, you need some space to place the board for storage when you off the water.
Hard SUP board is more expensive than inflatable one.

Inflatable SUP Board
Right now, the inflatable material is solid and strong enough, and much lighter than before, it is used for making SUP board.
The inflatable SUP board is much smaller when deflated. You just need a large suitcase or backpack to store all the gears when you go stand up paddling. Super easy to carry and store. Inflatable SUP board is much cheaper than the hard boards.
The light weight, small packing size and cheap price help with the popularity of stand-up paddling sport.
Though there are various types of SUP boards, they have common structures.
Let’s take an inflatable SUP all-round board for example.

structure of a Stand Up Paddle board
Double wall fabric: This is the surface layer of the SUP board. It can protect the board, and you can print your characteristic pattern.
Bungee rope: The bungee rope can tie your backpack or luggage to the deck.
Handle: It is for your carrying the board.
Non-slip EVA: This is where you stand on the board. It is soft, comfortable, and prevent you from slipping.
Valve: For inflatable SUP board, there is a valve for inflation and deflation. The hard board doesn’t have valve.
D-Ring: Like surfing board, there is a D-Ring for tying you to the board with a foot strap. It will be easier for you finding your board when you fall into the water.
Laminated PVC: The laminated PVC layer seals the top and bottom PVC layers of the board. It is waterproof and air tight. It also holds up the shape of the board.
Removable center fin: The center fin increases the stability of the board in water. And it is designed removable for easy storage. There are shapes of the center fin, and made of different materials. We’ll talk about it later.
Removable side fins: The side fins would increase the stability of the board in water more, especially when the water is not so quiet. It helps you sail straightly, and more control over the SUP board.
Now, let’s take a look at the inflatable SUP board.
Dropstitch Structure of Inflatable SUP Board
All of the construction methods start with the dropstitch in the center; thousands of internal threads between the two dropstitch layers which when filled with air allow the board to only expand to a certain point before they pull tight and form the rigid SUP's shape. The dropstitch fabric alone isn’t airtight, a PVC layer is applied to it to make it airtight when it’s inflated. Single skin inflatable SUP board then is made. Single skin inflatable SUP board is light, and cheap. Because it’s single skin, it is soft, and would be easily broken once it is punched by some rock or something hard in water. You need to be careful about it.

Different Dropstitch Structures
To make the inflatable sup board stronger, a second layer of PVC would be applied to a single layer board. Then it becomes a double layer inflatable SUP board. Because the material is so light that a double layer sup board in not much heavier than a single skin one. But much more durable and stiffer. It feels almost as strong as a hard board when it’s fully inflated.
There is now another kind of inflatable SUP board, it like combining the single skin and double layer board together. It has only one layer of PVC to the dropstitch fabric, but much thicker than a single skin. So, it is as strong as a double layer board, but lighter than it. A lot of brands are using this technology to make their inflatable SUP board.
It is obvious that the inflatable sup board has a lot of advantages. An inflatable SUP board is light in weight, easy to pack, carry and store. It is cheap in price, but could be as functional as a hard board. All these helps people who love water could enjoy water sport better.
Inflatable SUP board has so many advantages though, it has some disadvantages. It should not be exposed to the sunshine for long time. The heat and UV would reduce the durability, performance of airtight and the painting. It is not that hard than a real hard board, it would bulge when hard impact occurs. Normally, an inflatable SUP board could only be used about 3 years.
Boston Air Valve

Boston Air Valve
A Boston valve is one-way check valve with 2 ports, which allows for easy inflation and quick deflation of inflatable items. It is used in larger inflatable products, like inflatable boats and SUP boards, to speed up the process of inflation and deflation.
Center Fins
Center fins influence almost everything in regards to your paddle board’s stability, maneuverability and overall feel.
For different purposes, you would choose different fins. Let’s take a look.
The Swept Back:

Swept Back Fin
The mass center of the fin is drawn to the back so that it is easy to sail in straight line with it. And the swept back fin has bigger surface, it helps with the stability of the board. Along with the stability provided by the fin, it is hard for you to make a fast turn. It’s a better choice for long distance touring or straight-line racing.

Upright Fin
To the opposite of the swept back fin, the upright fin keeps most part of the fin in front, and it has smaller surface. So the resistance in water is smaller so you could make fast turn. It is used by the boards for surfing and whitewater.
General all-round fin:

General all-round fin
General all-round fin is like the middle module between swept fin and upright fin. 80% of the boards have the general all-round fins installed. You can us it for surfing or in flatwater. It is good for beginners to the SUP board.
Positions of the center fin:
The usage of the board also affects the position of the center fin on the board.
The reason is similar to the shapes of the fins.

Front Position
If you want use your board to go straight, or for long trip, you can install the center fin in the front.

Back Position
If you want to use your board for surfing or whitewater, you should install the center fin in the back.

Middle Position
If you want to use your board for all purpose, not the expert level though, you should install the fin in the middle.
Side fins:

Inflatabe SUP board with side fins
As you can see, there are SUP boards with only 1 center fin, and boards with 1 center fin and 2 side fins.
How to choose them? Still, it depends on where and how you want to use your SUP board.
Board with 1 center fin is more flexible, and requires the paddler has better balance for himself. It is used by surfing, racing, whitewater players.
Board with 1 center fin and 2 side fins is more stable. Because of the 2 extra fin, there is more resistance to them while in water. It is not for speed, it is for stability. It is good for beginners, and riders who want to play in flatwater or take a long touring.
Material of the fin:
The fins, no matter if it is the center fin or the side fins, are made of hard material so that it could take some force in water.
Normally, the fins are made of plastic, ABS, glass fiber, and carbon fibers.
The plastic and ABS are cheap and flexible, but it’s not so durable as glass fiber. And it is not eco friendly so that fewer and fewer fins are made of plastic or ABS.
Glass fiber is durable, but not so flexible. And it is heavy. It is not eco friendly neither.
Carbon fiber flexible, and durable as well. But it is the most expensive one of the three.
Other gears to go SUP:
You need some other gears to go standup paddling. Here is a brief introduction.

Paddle: A paddle is necessary for SUP, because it is called standup paddling. Paddles are various in materials and prices. Mostly, the poles are made of aluminum, the paddles are made of ABS or glass fiber. There are also paddles made of carbon fiber. It is expensive. The most important thing is that the paddle should be airtight so that it could flow a little bit if you drop it in the water and you can pick it up again.
Pump: If your board is inflatable SUP board, the pump is a necessary gear to take along. There are manual pump and electrical pump.
Foot Strap: The foot strap ties you and the board together. It is easy for you to find your board when you fall into the water.
Life Jacket: If you are not a good swimmer, a life jacket is the most important gear for you. It may save your life when you fall into the water. And if you play the SUP board in whitewater, you also need to wear a life jacket. In some specific country or area, SUP board is considered as a boat, riders are required to wear life jackets.
For these gears, there are also a lot to talk about. We’ll talk about it later.
How to choose your SUP board?
About You
If you are a beginner, here are some suggestions.
My first suggestion is to know your capability. If you are a beginner, no doubt, you should choose an all-round board, for all purpose usage. You should also choose a board with 1 general all-round center fin and 2 side fins. This kind of board would be stable. You should start in a peaceful lake or flatwater. One more important thing, you must wear your life jacket. It would be better if you can find some experienced rider to teach you.
If you are an experienced rider, you should consider your usage. As we mentioned, there are different types of SUP board for different usage. If you want to surf, then you can choose the surf board with 1 swept back center fin installed to the tail so that you can make quick turning in wave and whitewater. If you want to race, you need a racing board, and install fins to your preference. If you want to take a trip, you need a touring board, and rigging belt or bungees is a necessary. If you want to do yoga, then you need a wide flat yoga board. If you use it in the river, lake, or coast, you’ll need an anchor, too, preventing your floating away.
About the Board
Let’s take a look at the board.
No matter it is an inflatable SUP board or hard board, it should be straight. The board should be of the shape as it should be. The surface should not have any bulge. Especially for the inflatable SUP board. If there is a bulge, that point has something wrong. And that point is more easily broken under sunshine or furious temperature change.
If you are choosing a hard board, the coating layer, which is usually resin, should cover the board completely. The water in the sea or lake is not that clean or pure, it may damage the wood board. The coating layer protects the board from the water. The coating layer sometimes also helps reducing the resistance in water.
Volume and weight capacity is another important aspect you must consider.
A SUP board must work for your size. If the board doesn’t displace the correct amount of water for your weight, you won’t be supported well and the board may feel unstable. Board volume and weight capacity are two factors that affect how stable you will feel and how well the board will travel through the water.
Volume and weight capacity are determined by the length, width and thickness of the board. SUP manufacturers combine these three dimensions in different ways to achieve different performance characteristics
Volume: A paddle board's volume, expressed in liters, gives an indication of the board’s ability to float with weight on it. The higher the volume, the more weight the board can support.
Weight capacity: Each paddle board has a rider weight capacity. Knowing weight capacity is important because if you’re too heavy for a board, it will ride lower in the water and be inefficient to paddle. When thinking about weight capacity, consider the total amount of weight you will put on the board, including your body weight and the weight of any gear, food and drinking water that you’ll be taking with you.
If you are choosing a inflatable SUP board, airtightness is very important aspect you should pay attention to. Especially the side wall taping, should be completely sealed so that your board won’t sink or off balance.
So, here are some tips for choose your SUP board. We’ll keep this article updated if new stuff comes to my mind!

2021.12.07 02:55 mathfem [EVENT] Lessons from a Raid

While the raid on Barkstuin Heide had been a success for the Black Turbans, the simultaneous raid on Kalkwel had not. While the Black Turbans had been prepared to fight a local militia or an infantry-based garrison, they had not been prepared to fight artillery and armed vehicles. It was clear that, if they were to continue to raid targets like Kalkwel, they would need to upgrade their armaments. Luckily, the loot from the raid was plenty to provide for said upgrades. In addition to repairing the damaged units from the raid, the Black Turbans would invest in the development of two new types of unit: the Black Turban Trooper and the Black Turban Gunner. With these new units, they could hopefully make the next raid more successful than Kalkwel.

2021.12.07 02:55 Kris_with_a_B Is it worth it to buy Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the sole purpose of playing Super Mario Galaxy?

I've beaten Super Mario 64 once before and I have little to no interest in playing Super Mario Sunshine. Super Mario Galaxy has intrigued me lately, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars is really hard to find, and is actually in stock at my local Best Buy. All of that is on top of the fact that the game is limited edition and is probably going to be going off the market soon. Should I just pick a copy up anyway while I can, even if I'm not planning on playing 2 of the 3 games it comes with?
